34-year-old William Wyatt plead not guilty in court Wednesday. His attorney says he's confident wyatt will be found innocent. He claims the encounter between Wyatt and the former police officer was consensual.
It was a quick court appearance for William Wyatt. The 34-year-old Fresno Police officer is accused of raping a former Reedley Police officer while she was unconscious, two years ago. Wyatt plead not guilty.
"What you're going to find out when the facts come out is its more than a misunderstanding, it's a mid characterization of a consensual encounter several years ago."
Mark Broughton is Wyatt's attorney. He says Wyatt is a great guy and is engaged to be married.
"He's a person of tremendous character. All of that is going to come out of this trial as well."
But the complaint against Wyatt paints a completely different person. Aside from drugging and raping the former officer, Wyatt is also being accused of taking nude photos of her.
"I think we all know what happens in social media and if there's anything I've encouraged him to do is exercise better judgement, but that does not mean that he committed a criminal offense."
Wyatt was arrested after an investigation that lasted several months. He bailed out of jail within hours of his arrest.
Wyatt has been on paid administrative leave from the fresno police department since January 20th. His next hearing is scheduled for October 9th.
