Officials with Fresno Unified School District confirmed today that a teacher at Sunnyside High School died while biking with a group of cyclists on Tuesday morning.
Jim Healy, who taught Technology at the school, was riding with a group of cyclists on Auberry Road north of Copper just after 5:00 a.m.
A man driving a Jeep Wrangler came upon the group and slowed down to pass. However, Healy directed his bike into the path of the vehicle and the 55-year-old teacher was struck. He later died at Community Regional Medical Center.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing although it does not appear that the driver of the Jeep was speeding at the time.
Officials with Fresno Unified say the Healy will not only be missed by Sunnyside High School, but by the entire community.
