Gas Prices Jump

Anyone who's filled their gas tank in the last couple of days knows the bad news.

Gas prices are rising again in California, and they're not just inching up, they're skyrocketing. The average price for a gallon of gas Thursday is above $4.40 a gallon. That's more than 25 cents higher than just three days ago.

Why the spike? Analysts say it's a combination of the Chevron refinery fire in northern California in August, and a power outage at the Exxon Mobil refinery in southern California earlier this week.

"We expect retail prices to continue rising over the next couple of days, but the good news is, once again, the refinery that had a problem in southern California, they have started their process to return to normal production. That is going to help supply a lot. So we think these high prices will start to come down as we get through into the weekend and into next week."

If not, we could see the average price for a gallon of gas in the state break the record high of $4.61 a gallon, set back in 2008.

Some gas stations in southern California are beginning to run out of gas. One Costco station in Marina Del Rey ran out of gas on Wednesday. Customers were directed to another Costco in a nearby town.
