Richard Herron, 83, did not stop to think of himself when he saw a driver lost control over her SUV and struck the barrier of Interstate 84- he got out in the pouring rain and got straight to work.
He and his two sons Tom and Larry stood in the middle of the road and directed traffic away from Shelia Jenkins, 45, car at 2:00 a.m. early Monday morning.
But a tractor-trailer didn't see the sprightly grandfather waving his arms and barreled straight for him. Mr Herron leapt over the guardrail to avoid being hit, but didn't realize there was a 35-foot drop below. He died of his injuries.
