(SACRAMENTO BEE) A grandmother is facing child endangerment charges after a 1-month-old boy was left alone in a car seat on a Sacramento County sidewalk, authorities said Saturday.

California Highway Patrol officers were first to respond to a 911 call Friday afternoon of a baby left in the car seat on a walkway outside a closed restaurant on a busy street in what was described as a seedy area of unincorporated Sacramento, said Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos.

When deputies arrived around 2 p.m. they found the baby, along with a partially consumed bottle of brandy, tucked inside the car seat, Ramos said.

At about the same time, a woman walked across the street from a motel and told deputies that she was the grandmother of the baby.

The woman, 54-year-old Kit Samuel, said she had left the child so that she could retrieve some belongings from the motel.

After deputies interviewed Samuel, who appeared to be intoxicated, she was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of child endangerment and suspicion of public intoxication, Ramos said.

Witnesses said that Samuel had told them that she had been kicked out of the motel or had to leave.

As for the baby, Ramos said he was examined by paramedics and found to be OK. The child was turned over to Child Protective Services, with CPS officials trying to get in contact with his mother.

The neighborhood where the baby boy was found is in an area that Ramos described as "known for prostitution and narcotics," though Ramos said investigators had no evidence that Samuel was involved in such activity.
