A mother grieving her five-month old baby girl collapsed in her husband's arms when an Ohio jury announced they had acquitted the babysitter accused in the child's death.
As Erin and Dave Dobbins suffered in anguish, Jennifer M. Campbell smiled and appeared relieved on Wednesday in court in Columbus when she learned she was found not guilty on three counts in the death of baby Colleen, who doctors say died from shaken baby syndrome.
The infant died from a brain injury on March 24, 2011, two days after she became unconscious when she was under Campbell's care.
According to Campbell, she was trying to comfort the baby as the infant cried profusely but as she held the little girl, Colleen just went limp in her arms.
The caregiver, who is a former lifeguard, administered mouth to mouth and called 911.
The child spent two days at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital before she died of a traumatic brain injury. An autopsy revealed the child had bleeding on the brain and bleeding at the back of her eyes and the Franklin County coroner’s office ruled the death a homicide.
