Halloween is more trick than treat for kids who have to spend it in the hospital, but in a community near Oakland one 6-year-old boy set out to ease that disappointment for a group of young patients.
He knows their pain because he's been where they are.
Nico Castro is battling cancer.
After surgery and months of chemo, he's currently back at home.
When Nico found out a break in chemo meant he would get to go home and celebrate his favorite holiday he couldn't wait, but he wanted his friends at the hospital to have Halloween too.
Nico's idea of giving one kid a costume quickly took on monster proportions, and a quest for costumes for all.
Donors from as far as away as Pennsylvania and Arizona contributed costumes to Nico's collection.
Nico and his family have now collected more than 160 costumes from around the country, which they've delivered to his old hospital ward.
For Sydney Burnett, a visit from Nico makes the hospital a lot less scary.
"I didn't think I would be able to celebrate Halloween, but now that I have a Halloween costume, I think I should go out there and walk," she says.
Now Nico is a Halloween hero who knows that sometimes giving out treats can help you through life's trickiest times.
