Crews on Wednesday were trying to put out a wildfire in the foothills above Santa Barbara, Calif., while residents of some 50 homes evacuated.
"It's a rural setting above Santa Barbara. You have a lot of homes that are just scattered around up there," Los Padres Forest spokesman Andrew Madsen told NBCLosAngeles.com. "We're coming at it with everything that's at our disposal."
The fire began just before 8 a.m. local time, The Santa Barbara Independent reported.
By 10 a.m., the fire had more than doubled and live video showed it moving uphill toward the crest of the Santa Ynez mountains.
