Deputy Arrests Jaywalker After He's Caught With Stolen Items

(Press Release) A man caught jaywalking in Oakhurst remains behind bars – accused shoplifting in Oakhurst.

Deputy Sheriff Paul Chetwood saw 32-year-old Scott James Guthrie jaywalking through a busy intersection on Highway 49 between Raley’s and Vons shopping centers shortly before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Guthrie who is on probation for narcotics was caught in possession of roughly $150 worth of stolen merchandise from a store in Oakhurst, a stolen wallet containing nearly $200 in cash, and a glass pipe commonly used to smoke Methamphetamine.

When Deputy Chetwood questioned him about the incident, Guthrie reportedly admitted to stealing the items from a grocery store, but claimed he couldn’t remember how he got the wallet.

The wallet had been reported stolen by an employee of the business.

Guthrie was booked into Madera County Department of Corrections on suspicion of burglary, Petty theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, and probation violation.
