John Lennon’s killer will spend at least another two years behind bars after being denied parole for the seventh time.
The release of Mark David Chapman “would greatly undermine respect for the law and tend to trivialize the tragic loss of life which you caused as a result of this heinous, unprovoked, violent, cold and calculated crime,” the parole panel wrote in its decision.
Chapman has been locked up since he gunned down Lennon as the former Beatle and his wife, Yoko Ono, returned to their Dakota building home near Central Park after a late night recording session in December 1980.
The panel noted Chapman’s clean prison record since 1994 and his various program and educational achievements - but said they don’t outshine the heinousness of his crime.
Neither did the remorse he expressed during the videoconference parole hearing held Wednesday.
The 57-year-old is kept in a protective housing unit for his own safety.
