Madera Sheriff Issues Letter to Congressional Leaders

February 29, 2012 Updated Feb 29, 2012 at 2:51 PM PDT

(Press Release) Sheriff John Anderson has announced that a formal written request has been submitted to both Congressman Jim Costa and Congressman Jeff Denham for assistance in bringing resolve to the ongoing dispute between two factions of the Chukchansi Tribe.

Sheriff Anderson is requesting both Congressional Leaders add the weight of their office in seeking to have the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, or another entity, assist in mediating a solution to the current impasse.

Additionally the Sheriff has been flooded with follow-up calls from representatives of the media asking him to address about whether he plans to seek financial compensation for assistance from outside agencies during his efforts to restore peace.

Sheriff Anderson says he is not seeking compensation because his role as Sheriff is not to seek money but to maintain peace. Yesterday’s operation is no different than any other “call-out” operation that would take place during a criminal activity.

As far as his continued role as peace-keeper, Sheriff Anderson says as Sheriff of Madera County he will continue to do so because as Sheriff, he is duty bound to maintain peace.

With that said, he says a resolution must be reached and time is of the essence. This is why he has reached out to Congressional leaders asking them to step in and offer help in getting this matter resolved as quickly as possible.
