A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Ventura County on Tuesday while trying to pull his dog away from the tracks, authorities said.

The man was walking his dog near the seaside community of La Conchita about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday when the northbound train approached, said Ventura County sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow.

The train's engineer saw the man on the tracks and "initiated emergency procedures," Buschow said, but was unable to stop in time. No other injuries were reported.

An investigation is still ongoing, but the collision was believed to be an accident, Buschow said. The man has not been identified and an autopsy is pending.

The dog survived, he added, and ran to La Conchita after the collision.
