Man Shot in the Back in Winton

(Press Release) Monday night at about 9:00 p.m. Merced County Sheriff’s Deputies were responded to the 7000 block of Winton Way on a report of shots fired with a man down. When they arrived they found a 24-year-old man with a single gunshot wound to his upper back from a large caliber handgun.

According to witnesses a Jeep pulled up, the occupants started shouting gang slurs and began shooting. A short time later, deputies saw the Jeep in Livingston and stopped the vehicle. One of the occupants took off running but the other two were taken into custody.

Detectives were called to the scene and after their investigation a third suspect was taken into custody. 18-year-old Sergio Lopez of Delhi was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime, belonging to a street gang and violation of probation and remains without bail. The second suspect, 21-year-old Marcrudy Salinas of Delhi remains in custody on $100,000 bail for assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and belonging to a street gang. The third suspect is a 17-year-old who was booked into Juvenile Hall without bail.

The victim was airlifted to a Modesto hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.
