A new study says what you're having for dinner could be to blame for global warming. The environmental working group says if Americana's avoided meat and cheese, the earth would be better off. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), if Americans ate a vegan diet one day a week it would have the same impact if the country drove 90 billion fewer miles a year. Ernie Fleigel gave up meat and dairy cold turkey after he survived a heart attack. He says, " I'm alive and I'm healthy. That's what I want more than some fatty, rich food."
The EWG report calculated the greenhouse gases emitted in food production. Lamb came in highest at 39.2 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents per pound of meat. Beef was second at 27. Cheese was third, at 13.5. Trung Tran is the chef at the Loving Hut Restaurant in Fresno. Tran says, "They inject all kinds of hormone antibiotic into meat to make it big. Once you eat that you take poison into the body. Make yourself bigger. That's why America is so obese." Meatless Monday supporters say the one day a week change can reduce your risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
The new report is stirring up controversy. Some people disagree with the new study saying more research is needed.
