(Press Release) The Fresno County Sheriff's Office has announced that Matthew Hanson, the backpacker missing in the eastern Sierras for the past 4 days has been located alive.

Monday afternoon shortly before 3:30 p.m., H40, the CHP helicopter, discovered shoe tracks in the area of Cathedral Lake. As they followed the tracks, Hanson walked out to the open so he could be seen by the helicopter.

H40 was able to land nearby, and Hanson was able to walk to them. His official condition is unknown, but it appears he is in relatively good condition.

The CHP helicopter crew is assessing Hanson and will transport him back to the command post at Courtright Reservoir.

Cathedral Lake is at an elevation of about 10,800 feet, and is within the original 130 square mile search area.

In addition to the assisting agencies listed in the previous release, the Sheriff’s Search & Rescue Team was also assisted by personnel from Madera Co SO, Monterey Co SO, Contra Costa Co SO, Marin Co SO, Mariposa Co SO, Tulare Co SO, Bay Area Mountain Rescue, Army National Guard, and California Emergency Management Agency (CALEMA).
