An Arizona mother has been arrested after authorities say she put beer in her two-year-old son's sippy cup while out to dinner in a Phoenix restaurant.

Police were called to a Peter Piper Pizza restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona, after witnesses claimed they saw Valerie Topete pour beer into her son's cup. The boy then drank some of it and a witness called 911 after seeing the child fall out of his chair, leading the witness to believe he might be intoxicated.

Topete, 36, had been dining at the restaurant with her husband and their three children. After her arrest, Phoenix police say she admitted pouring the beer in the cup because the child kept reaching for the beer pitcher.

Officers examined the contents of the cup and determined the liquid was consistent with beer.

According to court documents, Topete explained that she had put a 'splash of beer' in the child's cup as a method of reverse psychology, hoping he wouldn't like the taste.

The child was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons, where doctors determined there was nothing wrong with him. He was later released to the care of his father.

Topete was arrested and is being held on suspicion of child abuse. She admitted to police that she watched the her son putting the cup to his lips and knew that he most likely drank some.
