The 2012 New York Marathon is off.

After a contentious debate both online and off, with nearly 50,000 people supporting a Facebook campaign to have the iconic event postponed or canceled, New York City officials have decided not to go forward with the race.

The announcement comes just hours after Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended his decision to push forward with the event, which would have kicked off in the hurricane-devastated borough of Staten Island.

Bloomberg said he ultimately decided he did not want a "cloud to hang over" the race
