A nanny in New Mexico has been jailed after she was caught on a hidden camera shoving a soiled baby wipe down a 10 month old baby's throat and dropping a used diaper on the infant..
Elvira Talavera Perez, 43, was hired by a family in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in July 2011 to look after their newborn son.
After about five months from hiring Perez, the family noticed jewelry, including gold chains and earrings, had gone missing from their home. The parents set up the hidden camera inside their bedroom to see if Perez was responsible for the alleged thefts.
Police said the parents expected to catch Perez stealing items but were horrified to see their son allegedly being abused. Investigators said the video showed Perez shoving a soiled wipe into the baby's mouth.
On another occasion she is alleged to have dropped a soiled diaper on to the baby's face as he lay on the changing mat. The tapes also showed Perez taking the items of jewelry from the parents' bedroom.
The father handed the tape to Las Cruces police who launched an investigation into the alleged abuse.
Perez was arrested after a two months investigation and is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond.
She had been charged with three counts of negligent child abuse.
