A New York man is being called a hero after saving an 18-month-old boy who climbed out a two-story window and onto a snow-covered roof.

Antwan Moore was standing outside his house in Niagara Falls on Thursday morning when his girlfriend heard a strange noise alerting them to the dangerous scene unfolding above.

There across the street a toddler wearing only a diaper and socks was seen teetering around outside a home’s second-story window.

'I heard a little noise from across the street, it sounded like a squeel so I looked up and there was a child on the roof,' Amber Haley told WGRZ.

'He was like walking around, and moving then, he slipped a couple times and I screamed a couple times, and then I started screaming for help,' she recounted.

Wasting no time Mr Moore found a way to climb up the porch posts and onto the sloping roof where he grabbed the baby securely in his arms in the nick of time.

In the meantime his girlfriend called 911.

When firefighters arrived they found the pair sitting on the ledge, the baby wrapped in Mr Moore's red sweatshirt for warmth.

He held the child until a firefighter was able to climb up on a ladder and take the baby from his arms.

At the window behind them, a little girl's face could be seen peering out.

Police believe the four-year-old seen, the boy's sister, had opened the window allowing the boy to crawl outside.

Police say the boy's mother was at work and his father was asleep on a couch.

When officers went inside the home to wake the father up, they say he was so unresponsive that they first thought he was suffering from a medical condition.

They then charged him with endangering the welfare of a child.
