Brave Brandi Odom rescued her brother from the deep waters of the pond at the back of her grandparents home when he fell into difficulty
( The Odom Family)
A heroic nine-year-old girl has died after saving her little brother from drowning in an Alabama lake.
Little Brandi Odom was playing in a Bear Creek pond behind her grandparents' house with her brothers Calvin and Robert, when one of the boys waded into deep water.
Diving in to save her brother, Brandi pulled him to safety by her arm but then she became trapped in the deep water herself and went under.
Her grandmother managed to get Brandi out of the water and administered CPR while her brother dialed 911 for the paramedics requesting the paramedics to arrive. When emergency workers arrived they transported Brandi to Haleyville hospital where she unfortunately later died.
'This is a tragedy but she gave her life to save her little brother. She is a hero,' said Bear Creek Fire and Rescue Chief Rob Taylor.
Tragically the accident happened because the children couldn't contain their excitement to get into the pond and did not wait as instructed for their grandmother to watch over them.
'They were supposed to wait for their grandmother before they went in, but they didn't,' said Brandi's mother Paula Odom.
