Officers will be looking for drivers who are doing things like talking on the phone without a hands free device or texting. In a similar campaign last year, more than 52,000 tickets were handed out.

Chief Jim Abrames of the California Highway Patrol said, "It's up to each individual to focus on their driving, keep their hands on the wheel and their mentals in the game. You're driving around a vehicle that's 3,000 to 5,000 pounds in general. That's a heavy duty weapon that can kill."

CHP's extra enforcement will run Monday through Friday this week.
