Officials Issue Warning about Kings River Contamination

August 1, 2012 Updated Aug 1, 2012 at 10:44 AM PDT

The Tulare County Public Health Department is warning the public to avoid a portion of the Kings River that's been contaminated with raw sewage.

About 63-thousand gallons of untreated sewage from the Reedley Wastewater Treatment Plant spilled into the river around 8 o'clock Sunday night.

The health department is warning residents to avoid contact with the river, including playing, drinking, irrigating or fishing.

The results from water samples are expected tomorrow. The department will reopen recreational areas once tests confirm the water is safe.
