A woman headed to Fresno survived a flight she won't soon forget. She was three hours into a twelve hour flight when she went into labor.
Flight attendant Susan Carnes heard the screams coming from the back of a Delta Airlines jet. "I said oh my gosh, there was another flight attendant with me, I said, she looks like she's going to have a baby."
Katherine Oyedoh wasn't due for a few weeks but her baby was ready.
Carnes says, "She was strong and brave and I give it up for her, she was incredible, because she's in a public place."
Luckily, an OBGYN was on board. With help from a team of flight attendants and worried passengers, Ebo Sulumey was born in an half an hour.
Carnes says, "We didn't have a string to tie off the umbilical cord," she said. "A passenger offered his shoestring. We soaked it in vodka and tied off the cord."
They used a pair of galley scissors, also dipped into the cup of Skyy vodka, to cut the last physical connection between mother and child.
Carnes says she's seen a lot in her 30 years of working as a flight attendant. She says helping deliver a child was a first. "I take the baby and I realized as I'm lifting it up over the seats, that everyone looking at me obviously, and I just held him up and I said, it's a boy and everybody clapped and there was laughter and it was really fun and she was so happy and excited and weepy and it was great."
Oyedoh is from Nigeria. She was on her way to Fresno to be with her fiance for the birth of their child.
