A high school cheerleading coach has admitted that she performed a sex act on a 17-year-old student as part of a plea deal.
Megan Crafton, 22, handed herself in to police on June 15 after the teenage boy, who was on the school basketball team, told police about the liaison in the parking lot of a grocery store in January.
Crafton, of Indianapolis, appeared in court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of dissemination of matter or conducting performance harmful to minors which is still a felony but means she will not have to register as a sex offender.
She had originally been charged with felony child seduction. Her lawyer Allen Lindy told Fox: 'She’s got her whole life ahead of her, and hopefully, this is just a blip on the radar for her.'
The 22-year-old had admitted to police that she had performed the sex act on the teenage student in the parking lot of the Western Supermarket in Shelbyville.
The coach will remain on probation for 18 months, serve 25 hours of community service and pay court fees.
If she does not violate her probation, she can appeal to have her sentence reduced to a misdemeanor.
Though the age of consent for sexual activity in Indiana is 16, adults are legally prohibited from having sex with anyone under the age of 18 if they hold authority over them as part of their job.
