A 5-year-old boy is safe Wednesday night after a someone steals the car he was in.

Selma Police say the mother left her car running and her two children inside Wednesday afternoon. While she was inside a Selma business someone stole her car. Her 10-year-old managed to escape, but the 5-year-old was still in his car seat in the back seat.

An immediate search for the car began, and about an hour later the car was found parked near Leonard and Manning Avenues about two miles away. Despite being visibly upset the boy was safe and unharmed.

Selma Police Chief Myron Dyck said, "Anytime you have a child taken like this, that's the priority. Cars can be replaced and people cant. It worked out as well as we could hope. The child doesn't appear harmed and was able to be returned to his parents."

Investigators say they don't think the car thief realized the kid was in the car until he drove away. If he is caught he could face auto theft and kidnapping charges.

Authorities say you should never leave your kids alone in the car, and you should never leave your car running and unattended.
