Sherman Hemsley, best known for starring as George Jefferson on the hit sitcom “The Jeffersons,” died Tuesday at his home in El Paso, Texas, according to TMZ.
He was 74. The cause of death is unknown.
Hemsley first gained notoriety for his role as George Jefferson on “All in the Family,” which led in 1975 to a spin-off series centered on his character. Hemsley, who served four years in the Air Force prior to his acting career, got his break as Gitlow in the Broadway production "Purlie," which led to his casting on “All in the Family.”
Hemsley was unmarried and had no children.
