A man described as despondent had been holed up inside his home with a shotgun in southeast Fresno.
Fresno police say they received a call at about 12:45 p.m. regarding a man who was feeling depressed about personal issues. Over several hours Wednesday afternoon police negotiators talked to him in an attempt to get him to exit the home.
At one point he came out to yell that he had a shotgun. He reportedly fired three shots while in the home, but none of them at police.
Residents in the neighborhood had to be evacuated from their homes.
Lt. Mike Doyle of the Fresno Police Department said, "It's a very volatile type thing. We're doing every thing we can to calm him down and just get him to come on out and talk to us."
Police had been talking to the man over the phone throughout much of the ordeal.
