Several mayors from across the country are standing up for marriage equality. On Friday they kicked off their campaign at the nation's capitol.
80 Republican, Democrat, and Independent mayors are involved in the project which supports gay and lesbian couples' freedom to marry.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says it should not matter if a person has two fathers. He says, "I've often said in L.A. that it doesn't matter who your father is. In my case, I didn't have one and hopefully soon it won't matter if you have two of them. Because if we truly believe in family values, then we should value all our families."
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says, "So for me the question is not if marriage equality will come to all 50 states, the only question is when. And with America's mayors standing up for what is right for their cities, I believe that day will come sooner than what most people think."
Mayor Ashley Swearengin is not a member of the same sex marriage campaign. She did not comment on her position.
