President Barack Obama spoke with Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy midday Friday about the elementary school mass shooting there.

The president’s call to the Democratic governor came as he continues to get updates on the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. At least 27 people were killed there, including 18 children, according to The Associated Press.

Obama used the call to “express his condolences and concern for those who have lost loved ones, as well as those who were injured,” White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters during his daily briefing.

The president was first notified of the shooting at 10:30 a.m. while in the Oval Office, Carney said. Obama has also spoken to FBI Director Robert Mueller.
