In the wake of tragedy begins a search for answers. One of the most asked questions; "how could anyone commit such a heinous crime?"

Experts see similarities between mass murderers. In fact, Dr. Eric Hickey at Fresno State says that's by design.

He says recent killers are not copycats, but students and teachers. Dr. Hickey says they are studying tactical maneuvers to try and maximize the number of people the kill.

Dr. Hickey says only half of all mass murderers have diagnosed mental illness. But that begs another big question; "then what is mentally ill?"

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer has encountered countless disturbed individuals during his 30 plus years with the department. Like Dr. Hickey, he says not all people who suffer from a mental disorder are dangerous.

Where that line is drawn, and how to be sure what side you're standing on, are just another two questions that will linger. If we're learning from past atrocities, knowing more about the people who committed them won't ease the sorrow they've left behind..
