They called a meeting to discuss overcrowded classrooms. What brought parents, teachers, and students together left them speaking on their feet.
The Bullard High School gym was packed Tuesday night. A townhall meeting was called to discuss the condition of the school.
Everyone that took the mic spoke of rapid deterioration. One person after another spoke of classes routinely having 40+ students, drugs and violence as daily realities, and a school district that lacks concern.
According to multiple speakers, recent test scores at Bullard High will drop the school from 90th percentile in the state to 10th. The blame an institutional "brain drain" that sends talented kids to other locations, and funnels in Fresno's troubled youth.
Bullard High has bout 2,600 students. According to staff, the school should not enroll more than 2,000.
A petition is in circulation; calling on FUSD to take action. Another common complaint; officials have not responded to concerns.
Parents plan to bring the fight to FUSD. Superintendent Michael Hanson and the school board was absent from tonight's meeting.
