Teen Boxer Dies After Sparring at Gym

July 27, 2012 Updated Jul 27, 2012 at 2:27 PM PDT

A 16-year-old boxer died Thursday night after what police described as "light sparring" at a gym in Burbank.

The boy reported that he was in pain after sparring -- often a short practice session with an opponent in the ring -- at Pullman's gym in the 4300 block of West Magnolia Avenue. He was transported at about 7:00 p.m. to St. Joseph's Medical Center.

Burbank police officers, at the medical center on an unrelated call, were alerted to the boy's arrival. The boy became unconscious at the hospital, and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, according to a Burbank police statement.
