A teenage boy who walked into a Florida sex shop with a gun and threatened to rob it before filling out a job application instead, has been sentenced to ten years in state prison for robbery with a firearm.

Cody Conner, 17, of DeBary burst into Cupid Corner in March brandishing the weapon at store clerk Cheryl Hunter, 32, and demanding cash.

But Ms Hunter managed to trick the teen into identifying himself by talking him out of the robbery and suggesting that if his family were having financial problems, a job might be a better option.

The teen, originally from Ohio, pleaded no contest in July to a charge of robbery with a firearm even though he had insisted it was a BB gun and Volusia County Sheriff's Department they never recovered the weapon.

On Monday, Conner was adjudicated as an adult as the defense and prosecution painted two dramatically different portraits of the boy, reported theDaytona Beach News Journal.

Defense attorney Steven Robinson described his client a troubled teen who suffered from mental health and drug abuse issues and who would benefit greatly from Florida's youthful offender statute.

Judge Randall H. Rowe III listened as Mr Robinson argued as to why the statute's counseling and rehabilitation program for youth offenders would give him a chance to learn from his mistakes.
