Astronaut Ron Garan says the video he put out on Monday is about as close as he can get to showing how the earth looks from space. The footage shows city lights and enormous natural phenomena like Hurricane Katia and the Aurora Australis.

The photographs were taken from the International Space Station's observatory module as the station orbited the earth. The station is 250 miles above the earth and moves at 17,500 miles an hour, completing one orbit every 90 minutes.
