A valley Indian tribe is trying to build a casino in Madera County. It was topic of debate at a town hall meeting on Sunday. The North Fork Rancheria is trying to build the casino off Highway 99.

On Sunday, tribal leaders argued the casino will boost the economy.
The casino will be built on public lands.

Opponents say if the Mono tribe should build the gaming site on their own property.

Cheryl Schmit with Stand Up For California says, "This is the beginning of the expansion of gaming throughout California. Certainly voters should have a say in that."

Maryann McGovran with the North Fork Rancheria says, "We're looking at 750 construction jobs. 1,500 living wage jobs and 2,000 indirect jobs. We have a lot of business support because they know they're going to benefit in the long run as well."

In December the FBI raided the Mono Tribe headquarters. Officials say the Federal investigation deals with misusing funds. Tribal leaders wouldn't comment on the investigation.
