A man suspected of shoplifting electronics from a Georgia Walmart early Sunday died when workers nabbed and restrained him before police arrived, according to reports.

The retailer immediately placed two employees involved in the incident on leave with pay, while a security officer, who authorities say may have put the man in a choke hold, was canned. Walmart officials said in a statement that “no amount of merchandise is worth someone’s life.”

“This is truly a sad situation,” said Walmart spokeswoman Dianna Gee. “We don’t know all of the facts right now. We’re in the process of working with law enforcement to determine all of the facts and cooperating and providing any information we have to assist in the investigation.”

DeKalb County police declined to immediately identify the suspect.
