A surprise announcement at Fresno State Friday. During the University's fall assembly address, President John Welty announced he will retire next fall.

He has been President of Fresno State for over 20 years. He's leaving at a critical time for the university.

Welty reiterated his support for Governor Brown's proposed tax increases. Without them, the university could face deep cuts.

He says he hopes to still serve CSU as a professor, and says he's looking forward to spending more time with his wife.
