Authorities say a couple driving a stolen Toyota Camry with three children in tow pulled into a Boynton Beach Walmart parking lot filled with about two dozen police there to do some charity shopping. Now the couple is in jail.
The 2006 Camry was being tracked with a LoJack system that alerted police when they arrived about 3 p.m. Wednesday.
The police stopped the pair, found 22-year-old Tesia Cain behind the wheel with what turned out to be marijuana in her wallet, her children ages 5, 4 and 4 months in the back without seat belts and boyfriend Dwayne Durham, 24, with a loaded .45 caliber handgun on his hip, according to arrest reports.
Now mother and boyfriend are in jail and the children are with their father, Boynton Beach Police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said Thursday.
When police interviewed Cain she told them she had borrowed the car from a friend, but she couldn’t tell officers anything about her friend, including the friend’s phone number or address. “Investigation revealed this vehicle to be a confirmed stolen vehicle with Cain in direct control/operating it,” police said in their report.
Cain, a Boynton Beach resident, is facing charges of grand theft auto, possession of marijuana and child neglect.
