Two young brothers in New Jersey died after police say they climbed over a fence and into a neighbor's swimming pool and drowned, while their mother was at home sleeping.
The boys' mother, who was not identified, reportedly called police just before 7 p.m. Thursday night when she awoke and couldn't find her sons, 3-year-old Kendall Francois and 5-year-old Kenley Francois, NBC New York reports.
The toddlers had apparently left their home in Union Township, N.J., and scaled a 4-foot fence in their backyard to get to the neighbor's in-ground pool on the other side, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger.
Police found the boys at the bottom of the 8-foot pool. Officers jumped in and pulled the children from the deep end, but resuscitation attempts failed. They were pronounced dead later at Overlook Medical Center in Summit.
