A thousand firefighters left Mariposa County Wednesday. The Carstens Fire is 40% contained, and has burned over 1600 acres. Crews made major progress during the day, allowing 700 residents to go back home Tuesday night, but another 300 are still evacuated.

Carstens Fire Raises Early Air Quality Concerns
A shift in weather conditions Tuesday night carried smoke from the Carstens Fire over the valley floor. Particulate matter of the smoke is making for hazy conditions on the horizon and creating ozone, hence making it difficult to breath for some Valley residents.
