Fresno police have made an arrest in the death of a 23-month-old boy. The boy was found severely beaten inside his mother's apartment complex, on Sunday.

Police have arrested 20-year-old Xavier Christopher Hawkins. He also goes by Xavier Weeks. He's the live in boyfriend of the young boy's mother, 19-year-old Emilie Bridges. An autopsy found 23-month-old, Syre Bridges died from blunt force trauma to the body. Police say he was severely beaten when they found him. He wasn't breathing and had bruises on his head. Hawkins was actually the one who called 9-1-1, on Sunday. He was booked into Fresno County Jail on charges of murder, child abuse and penetration with a foreign object.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer expressed, “I don't know that there's a penalty that can be given to him that would be good enough. It was very apparent that this child, as a result of his injuries, was tortured and at the hands of Xavier Hawkins.”

Hawkins moved in with Bridges and her son, back in June. Investigators say the boy's grandmother called police in September, reporting Syre had bruises on his face. Police and Child Protective Services tried visiting the boy's home numerous times, but no one was ever there.

The investigation in this case is still ongoing. Emilie Bridges was not home when police found her son, Syre, severely beaten. She is not facing any charges at this time. Syre would have turned two this month.
