The 2012 Central Section high school basketball championships tipped off this afternoon in downtown Fresno.

In the first game... Central Valley Christian hit hit a half-time buzzer-beater against Kings Christian... And it was close.

Either way, it's an indication of what you can expect at this weekend's games.

Legendary Central Section stat man Bob Barnett marked it.

The bucket infused the kind of energy Selland Arena has been known for.

Of course there's no shortage of proud moms and dads.
Some have kids here today that played in title games last year... Like Tori Moons' mom, Linda.

"She's excited and she wants to win. This is exciting. Last time here. She's a senior on the team."

This is the 8th year the games will be held at Selland Arena.

Coordinator Brent Smither says a total of 10 boys and girls championship games will be played through tomorrow night.

"I know there are some great rivalries out there, but for the battle of Fresno, I think Clovis West-Bullard has got to be at the top of the list."

There's even a special live Angry Birds halftime competition during each game.

12,000 showed up last year... This year, 13,000 are expected to attend throughout the weekend.

Craig Scharton with the downtown revitalization committee says the games bring some much needed business to downtown Fresno.

"Nothing says community more than high school athletics. It brings out the small town in all of us."

Here's the schedule for Saturday's games...

It's Lindsay versus San Joaquin Memorial at 10am.
At noon, Sierra takes on CVC.
At 2, it's Independence versus Ridgeview.
Then at 4, the Ridgeview boys take on Mount Whitney.
At 6, it's the girls division one title game... Hanford versus Stockdale.
The games conclude with the boys division 1 title game... Clovis West against Bullard.
