A Fresno man shot and killed inside in his doorway has been identified but police say his shooter is still on the run.
The shooting happened at the Cambridge apartments in West Central Fresno. Police still baffled by the shooting and neighbors are shocked.
Police say 24-year-old Alex Acosta was shot in the doorway of his apartment around Wednesday night; he died early Thursday morning from his wounds. “We heard someone running around out here but we didn't think nothing of it because it's a neighborhood,” says one of Acosta’s neighbors.
Seconds after hearing someone outside neighbors say they heard shots. “Just like that, it went fast—one shot and he was gone,” says Cambridge apartment manager Christina Crank.
Police say the shooter took off. Neighbors say Acosta's pregnant girlfriend was inside the apartment when the gun went off. “She didn't have much to say, she was in shock,” says Crank. “She stood in shock and cried a lot, then they escorted her away.”
Acosta didn't just open the door; neighbors say he first asked who was there. When the person answered, he turned the lock. “He answered back but she didn't hear what he said and when he opened it he got shot,” says Crank.
The murder is a shock to the complex; neighbors say Acosta was a good guy. “I knew him well enough to know he was very cordial, polite and respectful to all tenants,” recalls Crank.
According to his Facebook page he attended Fresno State; he was set to graduate in 2015 with a degree in Military Science. He also worked as a personal trainer at Triple A Fitness. “I know the guy who was shot, he was nice and respectful,” says a neighbor. “My best to his family, you know?”
Acosta's shooter is on the run. Neighbors say the person fled in the dark. “This never happened here before so we're really watching out now.”
The motive to this shooting is still under investigation. As for the shooter, police are not releasing a description just yet.
