In Visalia, there are a lot of complaints about the intersection of Burke and Laurel. Some people, like Tim Vande Griend are open about it, "It's pretty scary people come flying by all times of day and night."
Others, like "Rachelle," would rather keep their identity hidden, "It's extremely dangerous and someone's going to get killed."
They both live near the two-way stop intersection. Both say people run it all the time and speed in every direction, "I think they should put speed bumps in, they should put a sign that says stop sign ahead and they need to slow it down," Rachelle added.
The city has heard the complaints and is responding. A worker installed a traffic counter Wednesday morning. It basically counts cars and records their speeds.
Community Development Director for Visalia, Chris young says it'll help engineers figure out if the intersection needs those speed bumps or reduced speed limits.
"We haven't looked at traffic volumes and speeds in the area for a couple of years." Young added, "So we're going to take a look at it again and see if we can make the neighborhood safer."
Visalia Police are also looking into the safety concerns. Sgt. Amy Watkins says there have been six accidents in the area since 2009. The most recent happened on Thursday when two cars collided and one crashed into a house.
Sgt. Watkins said, "When we do receive complaints from residents in particular areas the police department will respond to the area and monitor and enforce law violators."
As for the people KSEE24 News talked with, they're happy the city is doing something and hoping changes happen soon.
It'll take the city a couple of weeks to study the area. When that's complete, engineers will decide whether any changes need to be made.
