Marriage is between one man and one woman. That was the stance Dan Cathy, the president of Chick-fil-A recently made and that was the message hundreds of supporters voiced out Wednesday by eating at Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide. Hundreds of people showed up at the Chick-fil-A, on Blackstone in Fresno.
“We believe in that and so one man and one female. That makes a union,” said supporter Bob Bradford.
Fresno resident Troy Matthews added, “I believe in the values of the bible.”
“It's the right to free speech. That's the bottom line. We have the right regardless if you dislike it or like it. It's our constitutional right,” said another supporter.
The drive-thru line stretched into the street. The line to get into the restaurant looped around the parking lot. Everyone took a bite into a chicken sandwich to make a political statement.
“The owner of this company has the right and I fought for this right to have an opinion. And you can't say, oh, Chik-fil-A should not be here. They can be here and I'll sit out three days if they want me to,” said supporter Ron Hill.
After Cathy made the statement, a number of gay rights groups boycotted the chain restaurant which led to Wednesday’s response. But gay rights supporters say they are not upset about Cathy’s statement.
“I certainly believe in their right to come out and make purchases and support what he's saying but I also believe that what he said and what the company has done with their funds in terms of making donations to anti-gay equality clauses is not right,” said gay rights activist, Jason Scott.
The owner of the chain restaurant on Blackstone in Fresno said she will not participate in any political debate. She says she is simply in Fresno to serve people chicken.
Gay rights supporters will be having a protest in front of Chick-fil-A restaurants across the country on Friday. More than 200 people are expected to show up at the Chick-fil-A restaurant on Blackstone at 5:30 p.m.
