The people that live in this Old Town Clovis neighborhood are in shock over what's happened to their neighbors.
It happened at 12:30 a.m. Friday morning when shots were fired in the area of Oxford and Eighth Street. Officers arrived to find two people were shot, in two separate houses, right across the street from each other.
Police searched the area and were confronted by man with a gun. That's when officers shot the suspect who was taken to the hospital where he died about three hours later. No officers were hurt during the shooting.
Police detectives have now learned that the 40-year-old suspect repeatedly rang the doorbell and banged on the door of the convent at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. When no one answered, he entered the sanctuary and shot at the crucifix at the front of the altar. He missed, and the round went into the wall. No one there was hurt.
Clovis Police have recovered the murder weapon, a shotgun. The same weapon with which the man confronted two Clovis Police officers prior to the officer involved shooting. Pathologists at the Fresno County Coroner’s Office are currently performing an autopsy on the suspect.
Clovis Police are still on scene trying to piece together the investigation. Police are not yet releasing any information regarding the victims in the overnight shooting. And officers are not yet saying whether the man that confronted them is the person responsible for the two shootings.
The investigation is expected to continue for much of the day. Justin Willis will bring you more information when it becomes available. For now Clovis Police are asking people to avoid the area from Pollasky to Minnewawa and from Bullard to Tenth until the investigation is complete.
