Class is now in session at Fresno State. Something new in each student's wallets is the Higher One, Fresno State Choice Card.
This is the first time each student was given a debit card to access their financial aid. School officials say it's up to the students whether or not they want to activate it.
Akliatese Harris started using hers on the first day of fall semester. She said, “It's alright. I kind of liked my direct deposit better before, but it's convenient because I got my money the same day my financial aid refund so, I got that the same day.”
But she, like many, still has a lot of unanswered questions. That's why Fresno State and Higher One representatives are holding several forums this week. They're answering questions and concerns regarding the new debit cards.
“Students were under the impression that they had to put money on the card and transfer to the bank account which is a misunderstanding. The card is just a vehicle to choose their preference,” said Fresno State University Controller, Anthony Forestiere. He added, “They have the two choices of direct deposit, or paper check with no fees, or they can open up a Higher One account, which has fees associated just like any other bank. They would need to look at those fee schedules. They could use it without paying any other fees if they use it correctly.”
Forums to explain Fresno State's new choice card will be held through Friday at the University Student Union.
