Hundreds of animals in Parlier need a new home. This after a possible financial mishap at the city level. The no-kill shelter in Parlier is forced to shut down. The city is calling it budget cuts but the shelter is calling it 'politics'.
Juanita Moreno is the owner and she says she's numb. For her the downward spiral started last year when her budget got slashed from $5,000 a month to $1,000. On Wednesday she could not pay for food. thanks to donations...there is some.
"It was running smooth but politics happened and we got attacked," said Moreno.
Lou Martinez wouldn't call it that. He says the city was struggling and there were layoffs. But to make matters worse the finance director just noticed something odd in the shelter's account statements; a large sum in the negatives. That sum came out to $18,000.
The city wants that money back. Moreno doesn't have it and that's why shelters are there with empty carriers, hoping to save the 200 dogs and cats.
"They're going to the most wonderful place in the world. I'm not crying because they're leaving I'm crying for joy," said Moreno.
The city is investigating the incident involving the account.
