The assault weapons ban enacted back in 1994 was terminated just a decade later. But the horror in Connecticut has many urging for its reinstatement. Senator Dianne Feinstein announced on "Meet with the Press" Sunday, she's taking action. She said, “The same bill will be introduced to the house, a bill to ban assault weapons.”
She said the bill will ban the sale, transfer, the importation and the possession of assault weapons. She says it will also ban big clips, drums and strips of more than ten bullets.
Fresno resident Nissa Lara believes more needs to be done. She said, “Right now they're easily accessible. It's so easy for anyone to go in there and get it and so basically, it's to what extent? Banning them, people I'm sure will be upset, but there should be more regulations on who can get them.”
“Just to go out randomly and hurt other people, maybe they should do background checks before they allow people to buy guns. Maybe that's what they should be doing instead of just selling them to everybody,” added Fresno resident Bernice Arredondo.
But employees and customers at Gilmay Guns in Fresno say Feinstein has it all wrong.
Bill Mayfield with Gilmay Guns said, “We have people who have mental problems. We are spending billions trying to control an item, when we could be spending billions trying to help these people.”
Gun enthusiast Austin Winter said he wishes school officials at Sandy Hook Elementary had been armed.
“If one of the teachers had a concealed weapons permit in the class, I believe a lot of those kids lives would have been saved because they would have been able to take action,” said Winter.
Feinstein plans to unveil the measure on the first day of the new congress, next month.
