The Lemoore city council will vote Tuesday night on whether to allow the use of air guns inside a city building. This push comes as the city prepares to build an air rifle range inside the parks and recreation facility.
The problem is current city code bans the use of air guns inside the rec center, but city council has the power to amend the ordinance.
City Manager Jeff Briltz says the move would be a good one, because citizens have shown a lot of interest in the gun range.
He says everyone who uses it will have to undergo safety training. The range will also be separated from the rest of the facility by steel doors.
"We understand that in every hobby, everything has some inherent danger and there's a little more danger associated with something like an air rifle. We're not talking about an indoor gun range. This is compressed air that shoots a projectile into very small targets. It's a skill building activity."
The push is stirring up some controversy. Some say a gun range should not be allowed in an area where children are running around constantly.
If council approves the amendment, air guns will only be allowed inside the rec center.
